Reiki & The Nervous System

The nervous system holds the key to the body’s incredible potential to heal itself.

What is the Nervous System?

Think of your nervous system as your body’s communication network. It’s like a supercomputer that helps you move, think, feel, and even breathe. There are two main parts of this system:

  • Central Nervous System (CNS): This includes your brain and spinal cord. The brain is like the command center, and the spinal cord is the main highway for messages between your brain and body.

  • Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): This consists of all the nerves outside the CNS. These nerves connect your brain and spinal cord to the rest of your body. They help you move and feel things and control automatic body functions like your heartbeat and digestion.

How Does the Nervous System Work?

Here’s a simple way to understand how your nervous system works:

  1. Sensory Input: Your nervous system gathers information from your senses (like sight, sound, and touch) and from inside your body (like hunger or pain).

  2. Processing: Your brain processes this information and decides what to do about it.

  3. Response: Your brain sends instructions to your body to react. This could be moving your hand away from something hot or calming down your heartbeat.

Your nervous system also has a part that handles automatic functions. This part has two branches:

  • Sympathetic Nervous System: This gets you ready for action (like when you’re scared or excited). It speeds up your heart and gets your muscles ready.

  • Parasympathetic Nervous System: This helps you relax and recover. It slows down your heart and helps with digestion.

How Does the Nervous System Affect Us?

Your nervous system has a big impact on your life. It affects how you feel, think, and act. If it’s not working well, you might feel stressed, anxious, or even sick. Here are some ways it can go off balance:

  • Stress and Anxiety: If your nervous system is always on high alert, you might feel constantly stressed or anxious. This can make your heart race and upset your stomach.

  • Trauma: Bad experiences can change how your nervous system works, making you more sensitive to stress and emotions.

  • Negative Patterns: Repeated negative experiences can make you think and act in ways that aren’t healthy. For example, if you’re always criticized, you might start doubting yourself a lot.

Understanding these effects is the first step to feeling better. This is where Reiki comes in.

How Reiki Can Help the Nervous System

Reiki is a type of energy healing that comes from Japan. During a Reiki session, I channel Ki - life force energy through my hands to help move energy through your body, which can help you relax and heal. Here’s how it can help your nervous system:

  1. Deep Relaxation: Reiki helps you relax deeply, which activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the one that helps you calm down). This can reduce stress and lower your heart rate.

  2. Balances Energy: Reiki can help balance the energy in your body, which may relieve anxiety, depression, and sleep problems.

  3. Releases Emotions: Reiki can help release emotions that are stuck in your body, which can make you feel better physically and emotionally.

  4. Mind-Body Connection: Reiki can make you more aware of how your mind and body are connected. This can help you respond better to stress.

  5. Supports Healing: By promoting relaxation and balance, Reiki helps your body’s natural healing processes, which is especially helpful for chronic pain or illness.

Understanding how your nervous system works and how it affects you is important for your health. Reiki is a gentle and effective way to help balance your nervous system, reduce stress, and promote healing. At Sacred Self, I am here to support you on your journey to better health and well-being with Reiki. Whether in person or from a distance, I aim to help you find peace and balance.
